The First Sellout in Indianapolis 500 History Brings Heightened Security Concerns

INDIANAPOLIS (May 27, 2016) – With more than a quarter of a million race fans descending on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, security and safety will be at the forefront of race authorities’ minds. As an experienced, local security company, Hoosier Security recognizes the risks and wants to ensure that eventgoers are aware.

“Most race fans won’t notice the extra security that’s being put in place at IMS, because it’s something they don’t necessarily pay attention to,” said Armando Perez, president and general manager of Hoosier Security. “There will be a mix of overt and covert security measures taken on race day, so fans should expect this and be patient.”

Some of this year’s added security measures for the race include license plate scans, car searches, random body searches, and helicopter monitoring before, during, and after the race.

Two helicopters supplied by Border Patrol and U.S. Customs (CBP) will be flying overhead while the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) will be on-site and ready to assist local law enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has labeled this race a SEAR (Special Event Assessment Rating) 2 event. DHS has given this label due to the size of the crowd as well as the historic nature of the race. These are both factors for a potential terrorism threat, but there are no credible threats at this time.

“This is the first year IMS has hired an outside firm to help with security,” said Perez. “It’s a great move because that helps to take some of the pressure off IMS and provides them with additional manpower to provide reinforcement and safety to fans.”
