Power of High Def Video Helps Bring Justice to Detroit’s Streets

Last month, a gang-related shooting was captured on video around 4:30 a.m. at a gas station on Detroit’s west side. The video shows a female shooter pulling a handgun from her skirt and firing shots, all caught on camera as part of Detroit’s Project Green Light.

This initiative, Project Green Light, is a partnership between the City of Detroit, local businesses, and community groups to fight crime. According to Project Green Light’s website:

On January 1st of 2016, the Detroit Police Department (DPD) partnered with eight gas stations that have installed real-time camera connections with police headquarters as part of a ground-breaking crime-fighting partnership between local businesses, the City of Detroit and community groups called “Project Green Light Detroit.”

Real time video provides immediate help

Since the video is in real-time, police are immediately alerted of situations. The Detroit Police Department (DPD) told Fox News 2 that the clear images from the cameras helped play a role in identifying the female shooter so an arrest could be made.

The Project Green Light Detroit website states that the initial 8 gas station partners have installed a number of high-definition (1080p) indoor and outdoor cameras. In addition, the website states that the stations also upgraded to high-speed network connections capable of allowing for consistent video streaming to DPD.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said that within two hours of getting the images to the media they had a female suspect in custody.

When asked how the clear images played a role in identifying a suspect, Detroit Police Sargent Michael Woodly of Project Green Light said, “(It was a) huge success, exactly what we had hoped for. We’re going to see you, and we’re going to see you clearly.”

High definition video aids in identification

In this situation, the high definition video from this gas station on Detroit’s west side as part of Project Green Light helped to identify the female shooter and bring her into custody.

Choosing the right camera for your surveillance needs is a customized process. It’s important to consider a number of factors when deciding what system is right for you.

More justice through high definition surveillance

In December of 2015, cameras at The Humane Society for Hamilton County helped save at the time a 3-month-old puppy’s life and bring #JusticeforMiri. If you’d like to read more about it, you can link to the original blog post about how a security system helped save a 3-month old puppy.
